THE RELUCTANT GARDENING CALENDAR – MARCH
Well, March is really the beginning of spring, isn't it? A million daffodils can't be wrong, can they? Mind you, you could have fooled me this morning when I was crunching hailstones under foot, freezing cold and soaking wet dragging a thoroughly unappreciative dog across the fields! Looks like I can safely shelve those projects which, just a couple of weeks ago, I though I would have to be doing by now - well, at least for today I can. Thing is, March changes. One day its winter, the next day Himself will be out there mowing the lawn, and once the lawn-mowing-syndrome starts its all over for the excuses, its time to get out there or live with the guilty knowledge that "I'm letting the side down".The lists of jobs to be done is as long as my arm - the inclination to jolly well get on with them is in short supply. The ingredient lacking is a nice warm day. Global warming is taking place, so they tell us - well, not in my garden at the moment it isn't.But the hedgerows are not fooled by the carry-over of winter weather, oh no, the forsythia is a blaze .. more »
IMPORTANT PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS OF A LARGE MIDWESTERN CITY, PAST AND PRESENT
As the third most populous city in the nation, Chicago is important in a lot of different ways. One of the best things about the city is some of the beautiful homes and the real estate market, which is pretty good and accessible in a decent economy. However, Chicago has been known for much more than just their real estate over the past few years and there are some very interesting things that have happened in the city. In the following paragraphs some of the more important dates, people and places in Chicago over the course of its history will be discussed and recapped.Starting off with important events, a big one in Chicago's history was in fact a huge tragedy. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 was a massive conflagration that caused devastation to the city. The fire started on October 8th of 1871 and went until October 10th of that same year because of a lack of adequate fire department services at the time.
